Current Research
Sarah Hatton is a research assistant for the Arts, Media and Engineering program's Experiential and Mediated Education Group which facilitates the Situated Multimedia Arts Learning Lab or SMALLab. Her role in the project includes developing visual as well as audio feedback for the SMALLab. She has worked on various arts and educational projects with the SMALLab team. These projects are often community based and have engaged local Phoenix elementary, middle, and high school students in the creation and exploration of experiential media in a variety of contexts. Selected aspects of SMALLab projects that Sarah has been involved in are detailed below. SMALLab is a hybrid, mixed reality, media environment that is immersive (like CAVEs or VR worlds) and uses full bodied, kinesthetic movements as modes of interaction (much like the Nintendo Wii). Participants who move through SMALLab use glowballs that are tracked in 3D space. The glowballs' positions are used as values to drive a multitude of interactive scenarios for learning, play, and reflection. More information about the SMALLab can be found on the website.

Past Research
From 2000 to 2003 I had the honor to work with Dr. Randy Pausch, his PhD students, a group of undergrads, as well as some amazing staff members in the Stage 3 research group. The authoring tool Alice, a 3D software that teaches people of all ages how to program, was developed by members of Stage 3 and I joined the group to create programmable 3D models and textures for Alice.
